About the Department of B.Ed. / M.Ed.
The Department of Education was established in Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (Previously Rohilkhand University) in 1986 with one teacher education programme only, i.e., M. Ed. programme with just an intake of 10 students. Today, the department has grown into a premier institution at national and international levels in the field of teacher education and research. In 1995, it was upgraded to Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (I. A. S. E.) by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the scheme of ‘Restructuring and Re-organizing Teacher Education’ considering the department as one of the best teacher education department in the country in the light of its growth and assets. Its image as one of the best teacher education department in the country again got strengthened when it was accorded ‘A’ grade by NAAC in 2005, which (to the best of our knowledge & belief) is the highest status accredited by NAAC to any teacher education institution and the only department in the country then. Currently, the department offers B. Ed., M. Ed., and Ph. D. in Education programmes within its ambit.
Since its inception, the Department continues to forge ahead fast for horizontal expansion with consolidation of research and teaching activities. The UGC has conferred upon the distinct status of Department of Research Support (D.R.S.) under its Special Assistance Programme (S.A.P.) of U.G.C. thrice (in the year 1995, 2001, and in 2007) for promoting excellence in research in various thrust areas of education, particularly: Vocational Education, Special Education and Educational Technology. In compliance with National Policy on Education (1986) and considering the strength of the department, the University Grants Commission (U. G. C.) in 1995 sanctioned the department B. Ed. in Special Education Programme. We were the first and only department in the whole state to start and run formal teacher education programme in the field of Special Education. In the country, we were only the second university running such a programme those days. We offered two specialisations in B. Ed. Special Education programme namely, ‘Hearing Impairment’ and ‘Learning Disabilities’.
Later, in 2005, we also started M. Ed. in Special Education programme with same two specialisations. In the year 1995, we were also entrusted with the responsibility of starting a novel course B. Ed. in Vocational Educational programme by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. This was the only department in the whole country running a teacher education programme in the area of vocational education. In the year 1995, thus, three courses of B. Ed. Specializations (in Vocational Education, Special Education and Educational Computing) were started and the existing M.Ed. course was remodelled and renamed to Applied M.Ed. Later, two specialized teacher education courses at the masters’ level – M.Ed. (Special Education) in 1998 and M.Ed. (Educational Computing) in 1999 were also introduced; however, at present, these courses are suspended. The ‘Applied M. Ed.’ course has now again been renamed as ‘M. Ed.’ as per guidelines of NCTE.
Department also runs Advanced P.G. Diploma in Computer Application ( ADPGDCA ) & P.G. Diploma in Mass Communication & Electronic Journalism ( PGDMC & EJ ) since 1998 .
In a natural consequence, the department conducted significant and important research in the various fields of Education including but not limited to Teacher Education, Special Education, Vocational Education, and Educational Technology. The number of research scholars who have been conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) under this Department exceeds 100 and the number of students who have qualified U.G.C.-N.E.T. also exceeds 100 within a short period of 35 years. We were the first in the state of Uttar Pradesh to award Ph. D. in Education on the topic from the fields of Special Education and Vocational Education. The faculty and students of the department published a number of quality research papers in national and international journals. Our Strength and expertise in the field of Education particularly Special and Inclusive Education, Vocational Education, & Educational Technology was and is being recognised at national and state levels in many ways. For example, the department was sanctioned a ‘Educational Electronic Laboratory’ in 1995 by UGC and a ‘Centre Of Disability Studies’ by the state government of Uttar Pradesh in 2009 to strengthen our teaching, research, and extension activities.
The Department is housed in a triple storied building in an area of approx. 10,000 sq. meters and is equipped with all the required basic amenities and also accommodates various special facilities like Media Centre (having its own studio); Computer Centre (having more than 50 computers); Rehabilitation Counselling Centre; and different Laboratories, such as: Psychology Lab., Curriculum Lab., Physical education & Sport Lab., Art & Craft Lab., ICT Resource Center, and Photography Lab etc.
