Department of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science was established in 1985 to provide higher education and facilitate research in the emerging biological areas such as Physiology, Environmental Science, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Endocrinology, General and Applied Entomology, Parasitology, Immunology, Microbiology, Fisheries and Aquaculture etc. Over the years, the Department has received funding from DST, DBT, ICAR, AICTE, UGC, MoEF, UPCST, NABARD, UPCAR, U.P. Centre of Excellence Program for research. Also RUSA grant for development of library, smart class and general laboratory infrastructure.

The Department imparts four semester course program for the Degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. in Animal Science (Zoology). At present twenty four papers are being taught, six papers in each semester. The course papers in M.Sc. are dealing with the most recent and emerging branches of Animal Science, viz. Animal Physiology, Environmental Science and Wildlife, Cell and Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, Biotechnology, Endocrinology, General and Applied Entomology, Parasitology, Immunology, Microbiology, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Genetics and Biochemistry are in accordance with U.G.C. guidelines. The Department has Animal House, Fish ponds and Vermi-composting centre to conduct experiments. For quality research the Department has specialized research laboratories working on Earthworm Ecology and Environmental Biology, Aquatic Biotechnology and Fish Pathology, Reproductive biology and toxicology, Parasitology. Faculty has produced high standard research papers in National and International Journals of repute. The Department has produced 80 Ph.D. in various applied fields of Life Sciences.

The intake of students in the Department is 30 and their admission is based on the Entrance test conducted by the University every year in the month of May/June. The graduate students having Zoology, Botany and Chemistry subjects are eligible to appear in the test for admission in the M.Sc. course. Admission in Ph.D. program is on the basis of merit in the University Research Entrance test against available seats in the Department.
