The Department of Hotel Management &
Catering Technology was established in 1996.As per university statute 7.17(2)
the Department of Hotel Management & Catering Technology is part of the Faculty
of Management. It started with a single room in the Department of Business
Administration and during 1998- 2002 was housed in the first floor of the Animal
science department where facilities like Basic Training Kitchen and Training
Restaurant were established. The BHM programme was accorded approval in 1998 by
AICTE. In 2002 the department
shifted to its sprawling new building with adequate space for development of
required facilities. Prof A.K Sarkar, Dean , Faculty of Management took over as Head, Department of
Hotel Management on Jan.27,2009 and is committed to develop the department
further so as to provide the students with the right skills set to enter the
Hospitality industry.
The Department of Hotel Management and Catering
Technology offers 4-year Bachelor of Hotel Management & Catering Technology
program with an annual intake of 40
students. Our University was perhaps the first in the country to commence a
Hotel Management degree programme in a university campus. The Department
prepares quality trained manpower for the Hospitality industry. In addition to
extensive theoretical and practical training in the hospitality operational
areas, management subjects such as Principles of Management, Sales and
Marketing, Human Resources Management, Finance as well as related technical
subjects such as Food Science, Nutrition and Hygiene form part of the syllabus
of the 4 year BHM programme.
Industrial trainings in hotels form an integral part of the programme. The
development of right values, discipline, attitudes and personality is emphasized
to prepare the student for the service oriented hospitality industry. The Hotel
Management degree programme opens several career opportunities and the graduates
can work in the areas of Food & Beverage Production, Food & Beverage Services,
Front Office Management, Housekeeping, Customer Relations, Marketing in Hotels.
Besides Hotels, these graduates are employed in flight kitchens, Fast Food
Chains, Hospital & institutional catering, Airlines, Cruise Lines and
educational institutions. Other service sectors also prefer Hotel Management
graduates due to their service oriented attitude.
